General Style Guides

Ask your instructor which citation style you should use for his or her course.

  • APA Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. 5th ed. (Babbidge Ref. BF76.7 .P83 2001) — Mostly used in the social sciences (including music education).

    Music Research: A Handbook (Music Ref. MLA 113 S28 2009) has music examples, pp. 272-277.

  • Chicago Manual of Style (Music Ref. Z 253 U69 2003 plus other libraries) — Detailed style guide used by many publishers, especially in the humanities. Turabian is drawn from this.

  • Turabian Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations. 6th ed. (Babbidge Ref. LB2369 .T8 1996) — Mostly used in the humanities (including music, but not music education)

  • Notes Style Sheet from the editors of Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association — Addresses problems in musical citation and style. Compiled from style manuals, memoranda, and editing decisions.

  • Radice, Mark A. Irvine's Writing About Music (online book or Music Ref. ML 3797 .I79 1999) Access is restricted. Click for more information.               
    Part I addresses style (capitalization, italicization, punctuation, spelling, citation format, etc.) in general and as pertains to music. Part II is on writing skills. Part III is on the treatment of musical topics in a narrative.

    Free. Covers APA and MLA. Does not retain information as you experiment. No way to maintain lists.
  • KnightCite
    Free. Type in citation info, and KnightCite formats it for you (APA, CMS/Turabian, MLA). Retains information as you experiment with formats and styles. Copy and paste formatted cites into word processing documents. Register if you wish to save, edit, and export entire bibliographies (this service is in test mode).

    Available for purchase. Sophisticated personal bibliographic software that is compatible with many of the research databases licensed by the UConn Libraries.
