Databases Containing Images

Art indexes also point you to image reproductions in magazine and journal articles.

Images in Journal Articles

Drama Research Guide > Image Research > Images in Articles

Many journal and magazine articles on most conceivable topics (sciences, history, places, cultures, objects) contain photographs, illustrations, and art reproductions.

How to Find Images in Journal Articles:

Step 1: Go to a library research database that contains citations to journal articles.

Example: Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective (1929-present; has art history journal citations )

Other Databases:
   Journals, Magazine, and Newspapers
All Other Library Databases (any topics)

Step 2: Search on any topic as usual.

Example: in Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective, type furniture and early and american.

Step 3: Use search features that limit results to articles with illustrations.

Example: in the Art Index's Physical Description menu, select "Illustration" (or some other feature).

For artists, you can also select the “Artist” field to find citations of reproductions of works by that artist.
For articles about the artist and his/her work, search for the artist’s name in the "Subject" field.

Step 4: Find the article in print or electronic format.

If there is a link to the full-text article or image, click on it (watch out though; links are not always reliable). Otherwise, do a Journal Title search in HOMER to see if UConn has the article in print or electronic format. Most journals are in the Babbidge Library, Level 3, shelved alphabetically by title.
