Drama Research Guide > Image Research > Subject Headings
Subject headings are terms that describe the overall content of a book. You can search these terms in HOMER. For example, if you need information about hats, use the subject heading "hats," but also try the related subject heading "headgear," or broader topics such as "costume" or "fashion" (these book will probably discuss or illustrate hats).
Use these HOMER searches to
search by subject heading:
| Sample Subject Headings | |
Anatomy (also see Body, Human) Architecture; Architectural Design Art (also see Drawing and other art forms) Costume (also try Fashion, Church Vestments, Clothing and Dress, Dressmaking, Head-gear, Masks, Tailoring, Theatrical Makeup, Uniforms, etc.) Drama Ethnology Furniture (also try Interior Decoration)History |
Makeup Manners and Customs Opera Theater (also try Theatre, Theaters, Theatrical) Theaters--Stage-setting and scenery (use plural form) Weather Also try specific regions, countries, or cities followed by these terms: --Description and Travel --Social Life and Customs |
To identify other headings more specific to your topic, do Keyword searches on terms drawn from your readings. Display the catalog record of an interesting item and look at the line that says Subject(s). Click on the terms listed there, or copy and paste them into a new Subject Heading search. You can also look at lists of headings and related terms in the Library of Congress Subject Headings ("the big red books"). These are kept at most library reference desks.
