The Music Library Building, located in the Fine Arts Complex on the south side of campus (see directions), has a modest lobby (see photographs 1 and 2) that is well suited for small receptions, buffet luncheons, bake sales, etc. The lobby is open whenever the building is open (early in the morning until late at night). See below for a list of current reservations.
Who May Use. School of Fine Arts students, faculty, and staff, as well as related organizations/events, are welcome to use the lobby.
Event/Rehearsal Responsibilities. The event/ensemble organizer assumes responsibility for procurement of equipment/furniture; set up; catering; clean up (including return of lobby to its original state); and compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. Library staff generally do not assist with event management and the library does not generally loan furniture/equipment.
Noise and Attendee Decorum. Organizers should ensure that attendees do not disrupt other activities in the building or damage the facility. Attendees should use "indoor voices," since the lobby is located just outside the Music & Dramatic Arts Library and near offices and rehearsal spaces. Musical groups may be asked to move if noise from the rehearsal interferes with patrons' use of the library. Also, food and beverages are allowed in the lobby, but not inside the library.
Event/Rehearsal Privacy. Because the lobby is a public space that connects three buildings, it is not closed for private functions. At the least, expect general foot traffic and use of benches by passerbys. As a courtesy to others, event or ensemble organizers should either "reserve" the space (to help avoid scheduling conflicts or concurrent events) or yield the space to those who have made reservations.
As courtesy to the fine arts community, library staff will record "reservations" (see below) so that event/rehearsal organizers can attempt to avoid scheduling conflicts. To "reserve" the space, please contact Music & Dramatic Arts Library staff Tracey Rudnick. Reservations are generally first-come, first-served, but library staff reserve the right to arbitrate conflicting requests or turn down requests that--in their judgment--would be inappropriate or disrupt other activities in the building.
