ERIC

ERIC: Educational Resources Information Center -- ERIC is the premier U.S. national bibliographic database of education literature. It has more than a million citations going back to 1966 and consists of two files: Resources in Education (RIE), covering document literature, and Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE), covering published journal literature from over 775 periodicals. Several search engines are available for searching ERIC (these are listed below). The information is the same, but the search screens, options, and displays differ.

ERIC Search Engines:

  • ERIC (EbscoHost) Access is restricted. Click for more information. -- 1966-current. UConn's subscription. Powerful search features (e.g., thesaurus, display control, set searching). Includes newer ERIC Educational Documents (ED) in full text (more info about EDs).

  • SearchERIC.org (formerly ERIC Search Wizard). Free. Simple interface. Has thesaurus (useful, but a bit tempermental). Includes links ERIC Educational Documents (ED) in full text, free (more info about EDs).

More Information about ERIC:

  • ERIC Educational Documents (ED) -- ERIC provides full-text access to many of the non-journal ERIC Educational Documents (ED).
  • Newer documents (ca. 1993-present): find full-text EDs online in the ERIC databases. In an item's record look for a link or PDF icon that says something like "Full Text from ERIC" or "From ERIC." You may have to scroll down if you're looking at the record's full view. (In EbscoHost ERIC, this is NOT the same link as "FullText?" or "Link to Full Text." Those are links to full-text articles in other databases.)
  • Older documents (ca. 1960s-2004) are on microfiche. These are located in the Babbidge Library microfiche collection on Level B--the basement--next to Government Documents. They are filed under ERIC and ED321 538. Note: as of about 2004, microfiche will no longer be produced; find the full-text documents online in ERIC instead.

  • Educator's Reference Desk (formerly AskERIC, National Library of Education, Syracuse). Formerly offered free web access to the ERIC database; still has links to several other useful resources.

Other Education Databases

  • Encyclopedia of Education -- Approximately 900 articles offer a view of the institutions, people, processes, and products found in educational practice both within the United States and throughout the world.

Other Music Education Web Research Tools

  • Music Education Resource Base 1956-present. Free web resource. 130,000+ citations in music and music education from 32 Canadian and international journals and other sources. No-frills (almost crude) interface with title, author, and subject indexing. Indexing goes back further than other electronic databases (e.g., 1940s or 50s; some titles are complete runs). See list of journals indexed.
  • CAIRSS for MUSIC: Database of Music Resources (University of Texas, San Antonio). "Bibliographic database of music research literature in music education, music psychology, music therapy, and music medicine. Citations have been taken from 1,354 different journal titles; 18 of which are primary journals, meaning that every article ever to appear is included."
  • MuSICA: The Music & Science Information Computer Archive
